Emission reduction for the Mediterranean Region was discussed at the Air Pollution Prevention Workshop.
Within the scope of the Project for Improving Air Quality and Raising Public Awareness in Cities (CityAir) which is implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization with the aim of increasing air quality in 31 provinces of Turkey, emission reduction strategies were discussed for the provinces of Adana, Hatay, Osmaniye, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Gaziantep and Mersin, which are in the task area of the Mediterranean Clean Air Central Directorate. At the end of the project, clean air action plans of the provinces will be updated.
The first of the Air Pollution Prevention Workshops series was held, within the scope of the Project for Improving Air Quality and Raising Public Awareness in Cities (CityAir) which is funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey and implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, with the participation of representatives of the Municipality, the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization and the representatives of the Clean Air Center from the provinces in the the task area of the Mediterranean Clean Air Central Directorate.
İrde ÇETİNTÜRK GÜRTEPE, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization Air Management Evaluation Branch Manager, made the opening speech of the workshop attended by officials responsible for air quality management from Adana, Hatay, Osmaniye, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Gaziantep and Mersin within the scope of the CityAir project.
Deputy Director of the international air quality organization CITEPA Dr. Nadine Allemand, Air Pollution Reduction Strategies Unit Chief Dr. Natalia Sirina-Leboine, transportation industry expert Dr. Irving Tapiaand agriculture industry specialist and Anaïs Durand gave extensive presentations on air pollutant emissions and emission reduction methods at the Air Pollution Prevention Workshop that lasted for three days.
During the presentations made for exemplary strategies for emission reduction in the provinces of the Mediterranean Region, the steps that can be taken to prevent polluting sources and air pollution caused by industry, transportation, agriculture and domestic heating were discussed. The outputs of the studies carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the projects conducted at the international level to prevent air pollution were discussed.
In the workshop attended by representatives from Municipalities and the Provincial Directorates for Environment and Urbanization of the Mediterranean Region, the technical knowledge and administrative capacities of municipalities and relevant stakeholder institutions were increased in air quality management.
